Science and Food in the Classroom

These exciting workshops engage students of all ages and gets them thinking about where their food comes from, how it is made, and the chemical and physical reactions used to prepare them.

This page focus in on Science, but virtually any academic skill can be taught through food science studies. For those children who are tactile learners – and let’s face it, most of us learn through all of our senses to some degree – these classes are enlightening.

Empowering Students in Mind, Spirit, and Body

Learning the connections between science, food, and our bodies, empowers students with valuable tools to make better food choices.

They are amazed when they learn how they can use science knowledge from the classroom to easily prepare simple delicious foods every day.

Once students have connected science standards to all their senses through developing recipes, preparing, and cooking foods, their comprehension and retention are substantially increased. And they are equipped with tools they can use for a lifetime!

Terminology and a few of the key concepts explored in our workshops:

  • acids and bases and how they react
  • emulsions, hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties and how to use them
  • chemical and physical bonds and surfactants
  • solutions and mixtures
  • hydrocolloids – so much fun!
  • how chemicals react to each other (edible chemicals)
  • colloids and coagulations
  • how heat produces chemical and physical changes
  • maillard reaction
  • so much more!!!

History

In important way to learn about a culture is through its food. Children, and adults, are better able to connect to history as they prepare and taste its flavors. These students are learning about how the foods they eat today became in integral part of their personal culture, through significant historical events.

Computer Science Concepts

Every student needs a good understanding of the computer sciences. Connecting these ideas to what they already know is a great way to enhance comprehension. A code is not unlike a recipe. For each to be successful, they must meet similar criteria.

In the Kitchen Lab, students use all of their senses to learn step-by-step processes from hands-on experimentation and collaboration.

Cooking!

Students learn basic food safety and techniques they can use at home in addition to scientific principles through making their own food right in the workshop! My students tell me that they continue to make their own foods at home based on what they learned in previous classes. <3 Nutritional information can also be incorporated.

These workshops are near to my heart. They combine many of my favorite things.

As a roster member for the SC Arts Commission, I have worked in the classroom since my own grown kids were small. It is pure joy to use this teaching art platform to integrate the science and art of cooking with academic standards.

I hold a degree in culinary arts and sciences as well as certification in Sports and Health Nutrition.
